Thank you for taking the time to explain all of this background and the meaning of the show so clearly. It is really interesting.

One thing I found especially interesting is the irony you pointed out that Bad Bunny sings about wanting Puerto Rico to be able to stay Puerto Rico while simultaneously singing that America should not have the same right to protect its heritage and culture but instead should openly welcome people from all over the Americas, regardless of what it may do to the United States.

Best take on this issue I’ve seen. I couldn’t put my finger on why Bad Bunny bothered me and you expressed it so well. I think even progressives who were excited for his performance couldn’t explain the significance and symbolism Benito used. I learned a lot reading this!

Really well written article. I would not have gotten any of those references without someone explaining it. I also felt like it was a missed opportunity to teach us non-Puerto Ricans a little bit about your culture and history. At the very least, perhaps subtitles would have helped. But that still wouldn’t explain all the symbolism there was. Thank you for sharing.

The background here is super helpful, and now adds to my anger over not Puerto Rico and Bad Bunny, but the decision of the NFL to feature this choice this year. As you said, this was an American event. A *quintessential American event* in the 250th year of our nation. It's kind of a big year for us as America. All the details about the cultural lesson aside, it should have been a quintessentially American celebration during halftime this year. And then given the political moment we're in with deportations, debates over immigration and multiculturalism, etc and this was what the NFL went with, it's a slap in the face.

Thanks for explaining this. I learned a lot about Puerto Rico. I didn't watch the show, haven't in years because that just isn't my thing but I'd watch someone explaining the history of Puerto Rico through a performance if someone was explaining what I was seeing as you just did and I knew it wasn't going to be explicit 🥴

I'm forwarding this on to several friends as it's such a great breakdown of the entire concert and all the subtext. I confess I watched none of it as I'm not a fan of his and I figured I'd have no clue what he was saying/singing anyway. I am going to go back and watch it now though, along with your commentary/analysis to help me out. Thank you!
