What Really Happened at 7500 S. South Shore Drive: The Chicago ICE Raid Story No One Is Telling

The story about a raid in the early morning hours of Tuesday, September 30, on the South Side of Chicago at 7500 S. South Shore Drive dominated legacy media outlets over the weekend.

The raid included Black Hawk helicopters, flash bangs, the whole nine yards. When the dust settled, 37 people were arrested, mostly Venezuelan nationals, including two confirmed members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua.

The narrative took shape: A "military-style raid" on innocent families. Children were zip-tied (this was a big one that was on repeat) and dragged naked from their beds. Doors kicked in, and apartments were destroyed. American citizens detained. The whole operation was framed as jack-booted federal thugs running roughshod over constitutional rights.

Governor JB Pritzker called it "appalling." Cable news ran with images of destruction. Social media exploded. And just like that, the story was set.

But here’s the thing about narratives that disseminate over one-minute reels and 240 characters: they’re really good at omitting important details or promoting critical thinking. Like the fact that the building was already a disaster zone weeks before federal agents showed up. Or that the "zip-tied children" claim comes from exactly one witness who wasn’t a resident. Or that most reporters focus on emotional language instead of educating it’s readers on procedure and Constitutional law.

(Minor details, I know.)

Before I delve into the weeds, as this article is quite detailed, I want to be clear that my goal is not to serve as a mouthpiece for federal immigration enforcement. There is no question that the optics of the raid aren’t good, and in this heightened climate, it appears to be overreach or at least the potential for overreach. And whenever children are believed to be involved, an emotional element enters the narrative. Additionally, it is naive to think that federal law enforcement can do no wrong; therefore, it is fair to explore legitimate questions about this operation, including those related to warrants, force, and process.

But when the media builds its entire narrative on shaky foundations and legal misunderstandings, we all lose. The real victims, Venezuelan migrants fleeing gang violence, legal residents trapped in an uninhabitable building, get lost in the noise.

So let’s do something novel: Let’s critically analyze what actually happened.
