There's this type of rock climbing called "free solo," where the climber doesn't use any ropes or safety gear. They just rely on their own skills and mental focus to make it to the top. It's pretty risky since one wrong move could lead to serious injury or even death. But the name "free solo" kinda shows how independent and real the climbing experience is since it's all about the climber's own abilities and connection to the rock.
Now I will not be hanging off a mountain anytime soon with no safety apparatus. Still, the dedication and mental fortitude that is required to do something like that is very impressive.
For a true understanding of what it requires and the risk, I recommend watching the documentary "Free Solo" about a dude named Alex Honnold who's a pro climber.
Even though you are sitting safely on your sofa, at the same time you watch this documentary, you will experience some butt-pucker as he tries to climb a 3,000-foot wall in Yosemite National Park without any safety gear. The film shows all the crazy challenges he's up against and how he prepares for the climb. The cinematography is breathtaking, and the interviews with Honnold are really personal. The documentary is all about human determination, chasing your dreams, and taking risks. It won an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 2019, so it's definitely worth checking out!
